My Goal is Not to be Better than Anyone Else, but to be Better than I used to be.

Academic Achievement

As School is nearing Summer Break, please let us know about our Academic Achievers. We like to recognize our Outstanding Students (typically 3.0 and Up, but not strictly*), especially when they perform as well in Academics as they do in the Do Jang. So, as the school year wraps up, and you see those Great grades coming in, *or you see marked improvement in your child’s academic performance throughout the year, please let us know and we will recognize their Academic Achievement, including Homeschoolers, at the Annual Picnic. As the picnic is earlier than usual this year, we ask that you inform us of Academics by June 5th, so we have time to prepare the awards.

If you have a Graduating Senior, let us know what their next step is, and we will include that in their recognition.

Again, Please Let us know by Friday June 5th!

Thank You!! See you at the Picnic!

Basic Tang Soo Do Etiquette

Taken from the pages or our Student Handbook

  1. A Do Bok should never be worn in public, unless for a special event, and permission is given to do so. It is permissible when travelling to classes or demonstrations to wear your Do Bok pants with a sweatshirt or T-shirt. Never walk around the Do Jang with your Do Bok hanging loose, or your belt untied. This shows extreme lack of respect for yourself and your training environment.

Korean Word of the Week

Word: 자기 통제 (cha-gi tong-je) Self Control

Phrase: 자기 통제를 연습하지.

(cha-gi tong-je-reul yeon-seub-ha-ji)

Let’s Practice Self-Control.

Diving Deeper: Self-Control is the ability to manage your thoughts, emotions, and actions when facing challenges, temptations, or strong emotions. This is one of the most important qualities you can have because it helps you make better choices without letting your emotions or thoughts get in the way. We practice self-control in the Do Jang by focusing on ourselves and taking the right actions to improve our training. Instead of worrying about what others are doing, we strive to be an example for those around us. We also practice self control during sparring. Even if you know you can strike harder, or you have an advantage of age, height, or rank, you still show control and respect to your partner by holding back. To be a good martial artist, it is not enough to have physical strength or skill. A true martial artist learns to control themselves and stay calm under pressure. Anyone can punch and kick, but it takes discipline and character to stay calm, think clearly, and choose the right actions.
