Korean Word of the Week

By BKS Faith

Word: 회복력 (hwe-bok-ryeok) Resilience

Phrase: 실패는 끝이 아니라 회복력을 키울 기회다.

(shil-pae-neun kkeu-ti a-ni-ra hwe-bok-ryeok-eul ki-ul gi-hwe-da)

Failure isn’t the end; it’s an opportunity to build resilience.

Diving Deeper: After you struggle and fail at something, resilience is the ability to get back up to try again. To learn from your mistakes, adapt and continue moving forward even when things get difficult. As a martial artist there will be setbacks, whether it be struggling to learn a new technique, not placing in a tournament, just having an off day in class, and even for us instructors and leaders when it comes to teaching others. The first time you try something, it will never be perfect and sometimes it may not go well, but those moments do not define your potential. It’s how you respond to them. Resilience teaches us that mistakes are part of the learning process. Instead of telling yourself, “That was bad. I’m never trying that again,” ask yourself, “What can I learn from this?”. That shift in mindset turns obstacles into opportunities for growth. This is something that not only pertains to martial arts, but in your daily life for school, work, relationships, and any other obstacles life throws your way. Your strength is not measured by how many times you avoid failure. Its how many times you choose to stand back up, learn, and keep moving forward. 가족!
