Back-2-School Open House/Bring-A-Buddy Week

It is that time of year! Many schools return this week, and our schedules resume academic normalcy. September 8-11 will be our Back-2-School week, so spread the word to anyone you may think will benefit from joining our martial arts family! Tang Soo!!

Korean Word of the Week

By BKS Faith

Word: 이기거나 배우거나. (i-gi-geo-na bae-u-geo-na)

Win or Learn.

Phrase: 이기든 지든 최선을 다하지!

(i-gi-deun ji-deun cheo-seon-eul da-ha-ji)

Whether We Win or Lose, Let’s Do Our Best!

Diving Deeper: In martial arts or even life, we don’t always get the results we want. Sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. But both give us something valuable, even if it’s not something tangible like a medal or a trophy. For those going to the Mid-Atlantic All Female Open, Sensei Washington-Jones always likes to talk about there is no losing. It is you either win or learn. Every year we have attended this tournament she always talks about this because you shouldn’t be focused on just winning. This creates unwanted nerves, the fear of losing, or the feeling of disappointment. Clear your head and focus on the moment, the experience, and all the new people you’ll get to meet and see all the different styles. If you win, be proud of the hard work it takes to get there, but don’t let that win stop you from improving. Ask yourself what you did well and how you can do even better. If you lose, it’s not a failure. It’s an opportunity to learn and grow. As yourself “what you have learned”, what to practice more, and what to do differently. Competition is a part of training, as it gives you the chance to test what you have practiced against other martial artists. In the end, you cannot control the outcome. You just go out there and do your best and watch your fellow competitors as maybe you will learn something from them.

Challenge: Try to use the Phrase of the Week at the 도장 (Do Jang)! 가족!  Thank You!  Tang Soo!!!
