Korean Word of the Week
By BKS Faith
Word: 통제 (tong-je) Control.
Phrase: 내가 통제할 수 있는 것에 집중하다
(nae-ga tong-je-hal su is-neun geot-e jib-jung-ha-da)
Focus on what I can control.
Diving Deeper: Control can be talked about in two different ways, physical control and mental control. Physical Control is the ability to control your body’s strength, balance, breathing, and techniques. It’s knowing when to be explosive in your techniques and when to be relaxed and having enough control to stop a movement when training. This comes with time and practice, but as you learn your body more you get to work on that control. Mental Control is the ability to control your mind, any fears, frustrations, egos, and reactions to anything around them. You can’t control what others do around you, but you can control your own actions and emotions. The mind is a powerful thing. Your mind and body work together and when your mind becomes chaotic, or you become blinded by rage, your body follows and becomes harder to control. When you learn to stay calm and in the moment, your movements become more intentional with purpose. Control is about having enough awareness and discipline to chose how you move, react, and respond..
Challenge: Try to use the Phrase of the Week at the 도장 (Do Jang)! 가족! Thank You! Tang Soo!!!
A dojo (Do Jang) is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent, but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully. – Joe Hyams
