Korean Word of the Week
By BKS Faith
Word: 공부하다. (gong-bu-ha-da) To Study.
Phrase: 이번 주에 공부할 거예요.
(i-beon ju-e gong-bu-hal geo-ye-yo) I will Study this Week.
Diving Deeper: In Tang Soo Do not only do we practicing techniques to make them stronger, sharper, and more precise, but also training the mind. Martial arts teaches more then physical ability, as we learn discipline, respect, focus, and perseverance while also learning terminology and language connected to our art. By studying Korean words and commands, we deepen our understanding of Tang Soo Do and the traditions behind it. Just as we always refine our techniques, we should continue to challenge our minds and strive to improve both in and outside the Do Jang. Terminology is such an important part of training because it helps us understand the meaning and purpose behind what we do. Learning the Korean words and commands allow us to communicate more effectively in class as the less we have to repeat or say a command in English, the faster we can move on and get more practice in. Studying also means taking responsibility for our own learning outside of class. Reviewing our student handbook, studying terminology, and familiarizing ourselves with philosophies and concepts and the traditions of Tang Soo Do allows us to show respect for our art and instructors. We should not rely solely what we learn during class, but take the initiative to study on our own, ask questions, and seek a deeper understanding of what we practice. No matter our rank, age, or experience, there is always something new to learn, and that willingness to keep learning is what helps us grow.
Challenge: Try to use the Phrase of the Week at the 도장 (Do Jang)! 가족! Thank You! Tang Soo!!!
A dojo (Do Jang) is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent, but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully. – Joe Hyams

Fall 2026 Master’s Training/Testing
What an Amazing Weekend!!!
Our Federation is such an Incredible Organization and a Huge Family of Martial Artists who Love training together and Learning from our Choong Jae Nim and each other!
There is SO much to unpack from this weekend, and not enough time for me to do it justice in this (late and short) email. Look for more information next week, after I’ve had time to process and highlight my thoughts on it all.
In the meantime, ask the instructors about the Tradition of our uniform, additional information about our belt system, and the meaning of “Moo Sul”.
