Korean Word of the Week

By BKS Faith

Word: 무술. (moo sul)

Literal Translation: (Moo) Military (Sul) Techniques/Skills.

Diving Deeper: In Traditional Korean Martial Arts training can be divided in three complementary concepts: Moo Sul (무술), Moo Ye (무예), and Moo Do (무도). This is designed to develop the whole person and not just teach someone how to fight because it allows the martial artist to grow equally in physical ability, mental adaptability, and moral character. Without this balanced progression, your martial arts training is incomplete. Moo Sul represents the physical foundation of our training. While it focuses on our techniques such as blocks, kicks, and forms, its true philosophy is rooted in the balance of um-yang. Within our bodies, every movement requires balance, as we must be fluid, relaxed, and adaptable while hardening into explosive, rigid power at the right moment. Showing the balance of um (passive energy) and yang (active energy). The philosophical meaning of Moo Sul is as we practice and refine our physical techniques we aren’t learning it to be aggressive, but to cultivate self-discipline and inner peace. We learn that true strength requires harmony and balance as we don’t go looking for a fight, but to give us peace of mind of knowing how to defend ourselves. Moo Sul is a paradox in itself, to strengthen and sharpen our combat skills for the ultimate purpose of keeping the peace. In the complexity of both sides, a balance is formed where the techniques and the peaceful intent work together to become whole.

Challenge: Try to use the Phrase of the Week at the 도장 (Do Jang)! 가족!  Thank You!  Tang Soo!!!

A dojo (Do Jang) is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent, but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully. – Joe Hyams
