Back-2-School Open House/Bring-A-Buddy Week

Korean Word of the Week

By BKS Faith

Word: 개선. (gae-seon) Improvement/Betterment/Reform.

Phrase: 완벽보다 꾸준한 개선이 중요해요.

(wan-byeon-bo-da kku-jun-han gae-seom-i jung-yo-hae-yo) Consistent Improvement is More Important than Perfection.

Diving Deeper: Improvement is not about becoming perfect, it is about recognizing where you can grow as well as having the courage to make small changes along the way. This is the process of making something better than it was before. To improve, it requires honesty. To be willing to look at yourself and recognize the areas where you need to grow. To push past your pride and admit that something may not be working or you could have done something better. It is easy to fall into habits because you are comfortable and want to continue what you’ve always done. But growth begins when you ask yourself, “What can I do Better?”. For us as martial artists, you may not notice improvement from one class to the next. You could be struggling with a form or technique and feel like you are not progressing. But every time you listen to the instruction given, correct your technique, practice again and refuse to give up, you are bettering yourself and making that improvement. This also reminds us that making mistakes does not mean we failed, but it shows us what we need to change. Use this as an opportunity to learn. Improvement is not about being perfect. It is about never becoming complacent with who you are today when you know you can be better tomorrow.

Challenge: Try to use the Phrase of the Week at the 도장 (Do Jang)! 가족!  Thank You!  Tang Soo!!!
