Korean Word of the Week

By BKS Faith

Word: 친절. (chin-jeol) Kindness.

Phrase: 친절해요. (chin-jeol-hae-yo) You are Kind.

Diving Deeper: Kindness means choosing to act with generosity, helpfulness, and general care for other people’s feelings. It can be as simple as helping others, offering encouragement, or making someone feel included. Sometimes it seems harder to want to go out of your way to be kind. Especially when you feel frustrated, overwhelmed, or overcome by other emotions. No one can decide your actions for you, it’s up to you to choose how you respond and how you want to be known.

In the dojang, we show kindness by:

  • Encouraging our Classmates
  • Being Patient with Each Other
  • Treating Everyone with Respect
  • Using Positive Words Even when Frustrated

A strong martial artist is not only strong in body, but also mind and character. We do not just teach how to kick and punch, but to be disciplined, respectful, patient, confident, and kind. The lessons we learn in the Do Jang are not just for there, but also anywhere in life. True strength is not being the strongest in the room, it is having the self-control to use our strength responsibly.

Look for an opportunity to choose kindness each day.

Challenge: Try to use the Phrase of the Week at the 도장 (Do Jang)! 가족!  Thank You!  Tang Soo!!!

A dojo (Do Jang) is an arena of confined conflict where we confront an opponent who is not an opponent, but rather a partner engaged in helping us understand ourselves more fully. – Joe Hyams
